VMS16 Plat - Frequent freezing problem

Tim-vanderMeij wrote on 1/4/2020, 5:09 AM

I recently upgraded from Movie Studio Platinum 12 to 16. While I'm enjoying the program, I'm being hampered by very frequent freezes of the program that require me to force-close it and start it up again, which is very frustrating. Any ideas on what might be causing this and how to fix it?

EDIT: Important info!

Version: Movie Studio Platinum 16 (Build 175)
Windows: Windows 10 Home (64 bit)
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz
RAM: 8GB
Video app: JDownloader 2 (to download footage from YouTube to use)

Symptoms: Program will abruptly freeze for seemingly no reason, but most often when I'm playing a video (in which case the audio will keep running), or when I quickly pause and try to do a different action like clicking on the FX button or switching to the Trimmer timeline.

Although a VP post it also applies to VMS.

Ah, thanks! I've added the additional info to the original post.

That's not enough Info.
What is your project format with settings? Screenshot please.
What are your settings in Options/Preference/Video? Screenshot please.
What is the amount of installed RAM ?
What is your type of CPU?

Maybe it helps if you set in Options/Preferences /Video the Intel GPU 4600 with updated drivers for GPU acceleration of video processing if you are using effects.

I don't use effects but the projects I've been working on a lot lately require regular use of transitions, so maybe that'll help? I'll see how it goes.

Welp, so much for that. Both the i7 and the GeForce 750 options didn't help. Got crashes within five minutes of starting the program!

j-v wrote on 1/4/2020, 7:06 AM

It looks at the freezes that your memory gets out of reach.
Maybe you can see some things during editing through the taskbar on the amount of used RAM

If possible send us a projectfile (vf) of your project without content so we can try it out on our installations.
Maybe we can find something.

Well it happened again! I was playing something, didn't like the micro-edit I made, so I unpaused with spacebar and then quickly hit Ctrl+Z, which crashed the program. Here's what Task Manager had:

When did you make that screenshot?
It looks after you closed Vegas or was it during the freeze.

A couple of things to check:

Your memory use concerns me. Check to see if Windows Subspooler or another service is hogging your resources.

Try updating your graphics drivers. If no luck, try disabling GPU Acceleration of Video Processing. This may slow down your preview, depending on active effects, but will not affect your render.

Yeah, I took about 10 seconds after the program froze up.

Graphics drivers are up to date. I've disabled the GPU Acceleration so that's back to how it was before. It didn't seem to be affecting my preview that much since the biggest effect I use regularly is Levels.

In terms of memory useage, Firefox of course uses a bunch but not more than 1-2GB I think. I have a lot of background processes (83) and a similar amount of Windows processes (89). Many of these are under 1MB of usage, some are 1-9MB, and if it's 10MB or more it's a proper app rather than a process.

I got the first crash that showed the crash report window! Here's what it detailed, in case it helps:

Tim, we are missing your Vegas File Properties  as reported by Vegas, not Windows.

The instructions in the link provided are clear, and we need the specific decoder information in order to rule out a common cause of some of the symptoms you describe. Thanks!

Ohhhhhh wait, I think I realize what the issue is. I viewed the properties of the .VF file, not one of the files used in the project. If so, here's what I got from one of them:

That worked!! I've been using the program for a few days now and no crashes! Certainly a few spots where it hangs, but I'm used to that from 12.0 so for me it's business as usual. Thanks so much!

I do have two more minor questions while I'm here. First, in 12.0 there was a lightning bolt function in the Explorer that removes all files not currently in the timeline. This was a very convenient feature and I'm wondering if it's still in 16.0 today. Second, is there a way to remove the hand that appears when hovering over an item in the timeline, so it remains just a cursor?

As of v. 13, "From the Tools menu, choose Clean Project Media to remove any files that have not been used on the timeline."

Re the "hand", it's been that way since v. 12 and I don't know (/need) a way to change it.
