YouTube Videos No Longer Drop Into Timeline

LAMediaCompany wrote on 2/13/2018, 5:40 PM

After using Movie Studio 13 Platinum for the last several years with no issues a couple days ago the program started losing its mind. The Explorer window would no longer populate with files or folders. After messing around with that for two days I finally just reinstalled the program clean. Now the Explorer window is working as it's supposed to, but I can no longer download YouTube videos and use them in a project. Whether I try to drag and drop them from a Windows window or select them from the Explorer window they will not go into the timeline. Oddly enough, any YouTube videos I had downloaded before this issue still go into the timeline with no problem. YouTube has not changed its MP4 codec, so the problem is with the program itself. Any ideas on what might be going on or how to fix it? I appreciate it.

YouTube has not changed its MP4 codec

YouTube changes its encoding all the time. Sometimes twice in a month!

How are you downloading your YouTube videos?

What does Mediainfo say about the files that don't work that is different than the files that do work?

I would guess that your YouTube downloader program may be the problem ?

I had a similar thing happen to myself during the last week.
After faffing about for a whole day, I realised the files were corrupt.
I use 2 different YT downloaders:
Any Video Converter free and WinX YouTube Downloader.

Any Video Converter was the one not downloading YT videos correctly - I guess an update broke something or YT changed something that the program could not work out.

I recommend you download WinX YouTube Downloader and re-download the YT videos that are not working in MS. Make sure to download the mp4 format.

You can see the file info there, though. There's nothing wrong with it.

Your problem is probably with Opus audio, which I've never heard of, and is probably not supported in Vegas.

Interesting. That's data from a YouTube video. And that same data is in every YouTube video.

Almost every YouTube video I downloaded last few years has AAC audio if wrapped as MP4, never had Opus audio in MP4.

To me it looks like as if your downloader would record the streaming version instead of downloading the file based version of the video.

Some previous discussion on Opus.

LAMediaCompany's file also has variable framerate, albeit that it doesn't vary much. Is that normal for YouTube downloads?

Yes, small variations like that shown in MediaInfo are normal, and don't stop the video opening in Vegas.

Last time i checked, 4k Video Downloader worked fine. There is a libav codec to download if you want the highest resolution downloads, but its all free.
