Yeah, I'm about to Nuke that ASSISTANT that, tick-like, has clawed its way into the bottom right-hand corner here. But not as bad as the Expand Track Layers "feature" . . . .
You probably mean "Expanded Edit mode" which the user can enter accidentally. It does expand track layers, but the actual "Expand Track Layers" feature can be toggled in the dropdown menu when you right-click on Video Track Headers. Nick has a section (#28) on this in his FAQ.

Very true, but as has been requested so many times on this forum since its introduction, it would be great to have the ability to turn it off via Options/Preferences or even Internal. It is so infernally annoying for those who don't need or want it.
The request has been to turn off "Expanded Edit mode" .
Please note the difference
"28. Why is my video track split between "A" & "B" tracks? If a red square bracket appears at the end of one of your video events then you are in Expanded Edit Mode. To exit expanded edit mode, do one of the following:
If no red square bracket appears then your track layers are simply expanded. To "unexpand" them, right click on the track header (the area to the left of the track) > uncheck "Expand Track Layers"."
"Expand Track Layers" feature was dropped from Movie Studio several versions ago for the sake of product differentiation. No Expanded Edit more there.

@Musicvid - Yes, I read that, and immediately my individualistic, “why should I do all that?” hackles rose.
A simple OFF switch is a choice I can make, HERE. My choice. My Control. My Screen. The continued silent, reticence by our MASTERS, for me, screams Marketing/R&D and DATA-Mining. Ask a question, and immediately this shapes the Product. In itself not a bad idea. However, this continuous, persistent, annoying “Look-At-Me”, “Look-At-Me”, “Look-At-Me”, Widget is just downright unwelcome in My House. A simple off switch would do it for me. But hey, I’m just a single voice wandering about in the Wilderness.
And no, the Earth isn’t Flat. Change and improvement are great. However, The Luddites had a point. I can see them smirking at the pickle we’ve gotten ourselves into with Global Warning. OK, that analogy was a bit of a stretch, but I’m guessing you’re getting my point.
This widget may have advantages, but the way it has been rolled-out and it’s presence, still remains irritating, aggravating and superfluous.
