iPhone .mov Washed Out On Vegas

CDBZ wrote on 10/6/2022, 7:39 AM

Hello,

I'm looking for proper settings to apply to my Vegas Pro Version 19.0 (Build 643). I've been transferring videos from my phone directly to my computer. When I open my .mov in Vegas, the contrast and saturation is out of wack. Trying to maintain the same quality and color I have when uploading straight from my phone into Instagram.

iPhone Model: iPhone 13 Mini

Videos from iPhone: HEVC - 4K 2160x3840 - Dolby Vision - 60 FPS

Any help would be great.

Thank you,

There is no such thing as "Sony" Vegas 19.

No version of Vegas Pro currently supports Dolby Vision video. This probably won't change in the near future.

Thanks for your question.

While Vegas may never support dynamic metadata if you want to edit the files in Vegas you can try setting the project to 32-bit full mode which should read the media as Rec 2020/HLG. Then in the color grading panel try adjusting log exposure and see if you can get an acceptable image. It won't match the phone but that's to be expected.

For future shooting I'd avoid HDR.

Only shoot in HDR if you plan on rendering your video in HDR and are using a 32 bit VEGAS Project with HDR mode turned on (and have a HDR preview monitor and windows HDR mode enabled on that monitor when editing). Disable HDR shooting in your iphone if that is not the case.

To help get your video looking better, AFTER editing (because 32 bit mode plays back slow), change the project settings to 32 bit mode (full range), do not enable HDR mode. If the color automatically doesn't look better, right click on your iphone videos in project media, go to properties, then look for color space in the following menu. Set it to HLG/Rec2020 if it isn't. See if that helps. If not, just try Rec2020. You may want to do a little bit more adjustment in the color grading panel from there to get it just right, especially to the levels and saturation.
