Movie Studio Platinum crashes when I try to import an MP4 file

AU4 wrote on 5/25/2020, 11:54 AM

Help! When I open the software it's fine. The second I tap of the MP4 and MOV files it crashes. Isn't the point of the software to edit these types of files? It won't even let me hit the open button. I click on the file and it crashes. Any help to resolve this would be appreciated.

@Lou-Towart

Please start your own thread with the information linked above. No two issues are the "exact same problem" because there are dozens of unidentified variables. Thanks!

I tried disabling the compoundplug in FileIO Plug-Ins (under the program folder) by appending the folder name with '.disabled' after watching a YouTube video. That didn't work for me, however, I just disabled both the compoundplug and so4compoundplug after reading a post here, and no immediate crash! My MP4s are in the media bin and played without issue. Not sure this compromises the stability of the program, so I'll be saving and backing up A LOT.

Note: Two dialog boxes came up as the program installed something for AAC and MP4 when I went to import the MP4. It went by fast. I also checked the folder and those Plug-Ins are still marked disabled.

Thanks so much, OneHipSista! You saved me! Your solution worked right away. Instead of crashing when I clicked on an mp4 file the program started processing and then gave me a hint that the "MPEG-4 Codec (MainConcept) successfully activated." I have no idea exactly what that means, but now the program works.

I was so disappointed in Vegas after being a loyal customer. I blamed myself for not trying the free version first and was frustrated by the Vegas's lack of phone customer service. Thank goodness for this forum and other users like you! 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Great to hear AU4. I wish I knew *why* it worked...lol but I'm SO happy it is functioning and the workaround helped someone else. I was expecting great things from the upgrade - especially on my new Win 10 Pro machine. The crashes and inability to find a solution were definitely frustrating. I had to re-install QuickTime player and some other codecs for AVIs, but everything is working really well right now. Fingers crossed!

@AU4 From the FAQ: "VEGAS Pro (14.0 and later) cannot be activated offline. The following codecs require online additional activation the first time they are used in each version. Therefore if you connect your PC to the internet especially to activate VEGAS, it is recommended to also make short renders in these formats before disconnecting, if you anticipate using them:

Intel HEVC/MAGIX ProRes, Magix AVC/AAC MP4, MainConcept MPEG-2, MP3 Audio, AAC Audio, Dolby Digital AC-3 Studio, Sony XAVC-L/XAVC Intra MXF"

(This applies also to those codecs of the list that are included in VMSP)

And: "It is necessary to be online to activate each new upgrade (version) and update (build). It is also necessary to be online to activate the codecs listed above, the first time you use them after each upgrade."

Hi @vkmast. I was online when I installed and activated the new software. I couldn't do more but click on the mp4 and mov files before the application crashed. And now, with @OneHipSista's help, I can click on the file and add it to a track, but now I can't render it. So I guess it's baby steps.
