MS Platinum 13 Lossless tranfers?

braveheart3158 wrote on 4/20/2020, 3:05 PM

If I import files in home movies from a DVD with Movie Studio Platinum 13 (MSP). The files transferred are .mpg files in explorer, and the same files look like MPEG-2 thru Sony Play memories program. Is .mpg the same as MPEG-2?
When transferring from DVD is it done as lossless file transfer with MS? 1 to 1?. I am looking for a way to have lossless from the DVD to the PC with MS.
In the past I have simply copied and pasted the DVD VOB files directly to the PC. Is that the best way to have a lossless transfer and how does it compare to using MSP to transfer as .mpg MG2?
My goal is to have lossless as possible when transferring home movie DVD's to my PC for future editing.

I have windows 8.1 and a high end gaming PC with Graphics card acceleration.

Thank,
Ted

Yes.

Vegas will smart-render mpeg-2 if the output properties are identical to the source and "No Recompression Required" is shown in the preview screen. You may educate yourself by typing "smart render" into a forum search and that is one preferred method for learning basic skills.

While you're at it, search for "Gary James Method" for a nifty way to import a whole DVD Title to the timeline.

VOB = Mpeg-2 = .MPG. Clear enough?

Understood. You are encouraged to start your learning curve here, and post back with informed questions when they arise.

Do you have a link?

@Musicvid This thread. It has an interesting discussion between two experts who know.

VKmast. That link you posted takes me to a thread post on the video help forum. Is that correct? I am in that thread. The original poster

I know you are. The info in my link there is mostly based on info from this forum :)

Now I know why I have shied away from that forum, having undergone elective declawing a while back

The elegant solution to that discussion, that was of course never mentioned, is a combination free decrypter / lossless rewrapper called MakeMKV. It's not a secret. Our OP might want to try it out (It is always in Beta to keep it off the radar).

Reminder: Ripping a commercial title is legal only for personal use one time, nothing else.

All home movies I have taken over many years with VHS-DV and HD Digital cameras.

Vkmast would you care to share your other screen name with me on the other site? if I had to guess I would say that its John M?

I need to look up the Gary James Method. Read it on the forums several times. Will google

It was me (and the same username as here) that linked it to you elsewhere. The link to the method is also above. All you need is to click it.
