Hi. I have just purchased Vegas Movie Studio 14 and I can't add my audio file when it's in the opus codec. Is there a plugin or something so that Vegas Movie Studio will accept opus audio files?
Hi and thanks for your reply. unfortunately that doesn't help. I don't want to convert to another codec. opus is the best quality audio for youtube and is lossles. I don't really understand why Vegas Movie Studio 14 doesn't support it. All my DAWs support it, including Cubase, Pro Tools and Reaper. Then once I spend hours mixing and perfecting the audio and render it in opus codec, I have to re-encode it to another format and lose quality to join it to the video? Yes ok opus is fairly new, but its YouTubes top quality audio codec, and Youtube being the biggest video website there is, I'd expect a big video editor to support it. All the top bands and best sounding songs are all using opus on Youtube. Here is an example. Right mouse click on the youtube video and click the last option called "stats for nerds" you will see that the audio codec is opus as are most of the best sounding youtube videos.
and if you don't know about opus or you don't care or don't think it's important, read this.
So I do hope Vegas Movie Studio supports it soon, because it's my favorite video editor.
As for video codecs, I also noticed that it doesn't support VP9, which is just as important for youtube video quality as opus is for audio. The vid I linked above is also recorded using the VP9 video codec. As are almost all youtube videos encoded with the opus audio codec..
You did ask if there is "a plugin or something so that Vegas Movie Studio will accept opus audio files:" But feel free to make a Feature request on the forum if the dev team does not catch this thread.
Just a sidenote: While Opus is said to be one of the most efficient audio codecs (especially for low bitrate), it is not lossless and at bitrates above 128 kbit/s AAC becomes close/equal. So if you could afford bitrates above 128 kbit/s (which I guess most video producers would compared to the video bandwith aside) it doesn't really matter if you use Opus or AAC for YouTube uploads (both are lossy). For uploading high quality audio content YouTube recommends using lossless FLAC @ 24 bit which you could easily output from Movie Studio Platinum (but as separate audio stream only). The very advantage of Opus is the low latency which makes it one of the best choices for live streamings.

+1
AAC is universally supported across multiple platforms. Opus is in its infancy and up for adoption.
Yes, overnight I learned all about opus and VP9. Basically, It doesn't matter what you encode your video and audio in. Under certain conditions and tweeks when you edit the video on Youtube, it's Youtube itself that converts it to VP9 and opus. So my questions have been answered. Thanks for all the input. I'm loving Vegas Movie Studio 14 😎
