My PC is basically unusable during rendering due to the high resource load placed on it by Vegas. Is there a reason for this? This doesn't happen with other editing software.

@Koshox - Good question in that you wish to know just how far you can press VP before the pips squeak.
Specs:
i7-8700k
GTX 1050
Vegas Pro 15
Your specs look good. It’s now got to be down to what your Rendering - Media and FXs - and in what Project Settings you’ve set in PS.
As a Rule of Thumb and forever I avoid doing anything on the PC whilst rendering. Maybe I’m incorrect in doing that, but that’s me.
As to is this the way with other NLEs? I have no idea. It would be one of the least important reasons I’d jump ship. What do I do? I use my IPad AIR2 and e.g. write this! 😆
I had a similar complaint for those using HappyOtterScripts for rendering. I added an option to change processing priority in which the user could select below normal or low (as well as above normal or high) to permit other things to be done during renders. I suspect that you can easily do this manually by changing these settings using Windows Task Manager. I might be mistaken, but I think the freeware SEMW extensions also support priority changes during rendering. Perhaps someone using these extensions could comment.
I often open a second instance of Vegas and edit a different project. Over many years there has never been a problem. Not tried rendering two project simultaneously. CPU & GPU rarely get above 50% so may be worth a test.
OK just tried to render 2 projects. As anticipated appallingly slow but no crash..
Even on my 'low end' PC it is OK. CPU utilisation still high (more that 90%) in Task Manager, but PC is absolutely usable for typical tasks (browsing, email, watching video, web programming etc). Usually I do not do video editing in other Vegas instance as I noticed then when I adjusting some plugins (mercalli v4 for example) that are also used in the rendering project the render might stuck. Simple trimming video editing works with no issues.
I'd recommend to update chipset driver if someone have the issue (I'd use Intel/AMD ones, not from Microsoft).
Rendering with VP the CPU usage is around 50% with low usage on the nVvidia and intel GPU's. Rendering a similar project with Edius 8v5 results in CPU usage 98% with low usage of the GPU's. When Mercalli is in use the CPU drops to about 50%.
The video finished and came out ok, render time was about 1:1. But for some reason the file size is much larger than with other programs. Like almost 10x larger. Am i missing something here? All the presets in Vegas seemed quite large. Wouldn't allow me to match project settings..

You used wrong framerate (in project settings or in render) and specified too high bitrate.
It's not VP to blame.
> All the presets in Vegas seemed quite large.
You can modify render templates (key in lower bitrate if you like, however I would not do this as usually wou will get poor quality video, I'd better downscale it to 720p) and save it under different name.
'Not present'? What do you mean? In VP15 you should have Customize Template button on the Render page (see section Rendering projects on page 497 in VP15 manual).
You have to have selected one of the templates from the list on the right (nearest to what you want to use) before you are able to customise anything.
True, but if the OP really has Vegas Pro 15, the "Customize Template" option should still be seen as greyed out. See my screenshot. The OP's screenshot does not include that option box.
