SnagIt 2021 .mp4 files and Vegas Pro

Steve-Johns wrote on 8/12/2021, 3:24 AM

Hi,

I'm currently using SnagIt 2021 and (an admittedly rather old) Vegas Pro 10.

Issue is that Vegas Pro 10 will not recognize the video portion of .mp4 files saved from SnagIt.

Has anyone else tried later versions of Vegas with the .mp4 files from SnagIt 2021?

If later versions of Vegas load and edit SnagIt 2021 files fine then it's time for me to upgrade my Vegas.   But if not, there's no point in spending the money.

Would much appreciate being advised by someone in-the-know.  Thanks!

- Steve

Probably just find a better way to "snag" the files or transcode to a more standard mp4 format using software like Handbrake.

If you want more advice share Media Info for these .mp4 files and maybe even make a short sample available for download. VP 18 can decode ordinary AVC mp4 files without issue, though if your hardware is from the same era as your Vegas it won't work with 18.

Hi,

Thanks very much for your reply.

Here is a short capture from SnagIt 2021:

And here is the MediaInfo info for it:

I'm definitely interested to know if such will work directly with later versions of Vegas Pro (later than my v10).

I will investigate Handbrake in the meantime. Thanks again!

@Steve-Johns You need to upload one of your original files to a cloud service such as Google Drive so others can download it to try. Videos uploaded to this forum get re-rendered.

Or provide the complete MediaInfo readout, not a summary. Chances are they are VFR, and will not open in Vegas 10, but will open in VP18.

But why guess? Download the trial and find out for yourself....

Are you sure that dropsend link is intended for sharing? It prompts for a login.

That is a strange mp4 file with variable frame rate at 10FPS and 318x184 resolution? I doubt VP 18 would work with such files either.

New sharing link posted.

Steve-Johns wrote on 8/12/2021, 9:47 AM

I have now determined that I can use Handbrake to read the SnagIt file and re-output it to a new .mp4 that Vegas Pro 10 can read. So Handbrake reads what Vegas Pro 10 won't? Yes, and that surprises me.

I would much like not to have to go thru such extra steps though, so if someone with Vegas Pro 18 could be so kind as to download the share link above and see if Vegas Pro 18 will read the video or not, I would appreciate that!

Former user wrote on 8/12/2021, 10:06 AM

VP is a video editor. Being an editor, it relies upon accurate frames so accurate edits can be made. Handbrake is an encoder, frame accuracy is not necessary.

RogerS wrote on 8/12/2021, 10:42 AM

What Doug said.

But FWIW it does open in Vegas Pro 18.

I'm not sure if any Vegas render templates support such a low resolution or frame rate, but that's your next problem.

Steve-Johns wrote on 8/12/2021, 11:33 AM

Excellent that it loads! Thank you.

>I'm not sure if any Vegas render templates support such a low resolution or frame rate, but that's your next problem.

Does this mean that even after successfully bringing it in, I may not be able to write out my edited version? (e.g. to a garden-variety .mp4 for the web)

I guess it would be time to check out that trial - if it can be installed side-by-side with my current Vegas Pro 10 (?).

Vegas Pro versions can co-exist on your computer. Many of us have several versions installed.

Any renderer in Vegas or Handbrake will make larger files than the original, which is (to put it kindly), suboptimal.

Phil_P wrote on 8/13/2021, 2:36 AM

Windows 10: Opens and renders fine here in Vegas 18 (318x184). Noticed that audio is considerably left heavy. (I'm sure you are aware).

I also use Snagit and Camtasia for various work types, but lately for recording bug repros and mixing walkthroughs etc. (for my YT Channel) I have moved to OBS.

nb: WeTransfer.com is also great and free and simple for sending files.

Yes, 2021 Handbrake reads your files that 2010 Vegas 10 won't, when AVC support was still in its infancy and Vegas had its very first native mp4 decoder. Where again is the surprise?

Vegas Pro 10 was quite good and quite "modern" for its day.

Hi. I have a follow-up question. I have upgraded to Vegas Pro 18 (actually installed side-by-side with v10).

However, when I drag in the same source material as above to Vegas 18, my video preview window is black and I have not been able to fix that. I do see a picture on the media event, but I only get audio when I roll the project, no video.

Also, how do I open the Video Preview as a separate window (ala Vegas 10). I have not been able to figure out or find how to do that.

Sorry for the relatively clueless questions - for many years it all "just worked" - probably because I asked the same questions back then!

RogerS wrote on 8/17/2021, 10:34 PM

Well that's odd, it shows up here. Go to preview device and reset settings? Does Vegas show any other media? (try a jpeg or standard AVC MP4 or something).

For the preview window you can click the title and drag it elsewhere to detach it from Vegas. Reattach ("dock") by holding control and dragging it. You can also press the double-monitor icon above the preview window to show a fullscreen preview on a second display.

Steve-Johns wrote on 8/18/2021, 8:55 AM

Hi. Thanks for your reply Roger!

Attached are the settings for working Vegas 10 and non-working Vegas 18.

I notice that Vegas 18 does not offer the Windows Secondary Display choice. (?)

Also attached, device info for the graphics card(s), GTX 750, which is kinda old (but has no issue with any other software I run). Do I perhaps need something particular in Vegas to work with the GTX 750 that is present in V10 but not in V18?

Steve-Johns wrote on 8/18/2021, 12:14 PM

By turning off Dynamic RAM Preview and GPU acceleration I was able to get a very poor picture in v18, instead of just black. However, the video preview window has no controls.

This is quite unlike v10, where I have video preview window controls and a good picture from the same source material.

fr0sty wrote on 8/18/2021, 12:19 PM

The GTX750 doesn't meet the minimum requirements for VEGAS 18, so that might be part of your problem.

GPU

NVIDIA® GeForce RTX or GTX 9XX series or higher with 4GB

AMD/ATI® Radeon with 4GB and VCE 3.0 or higher (Radeon Pro series with 8GB for HDR and 32 bit projects)

That is just the recommended specs for editing 1080p, for 4K, you want a GPU with at least 8GB VRAM.
