Vegas 19 Unstable / Hard Crashes

weinerschizel wrote on 7/31/2022, 1:07 PM

I have an open ticket to support for this as well but is taking some time. Curious if anybody else is experiencing this...

Problem description: Populate timeline with h.265 clips from Go Pro Hero 10. Begin making cuts / editing in timeline. Vegas crashes and takes desktop with it. Specifically: screen goes white, unresponsive error dialog pops up, screen is totally locked up. I press control+alt+delete, go to task manager, and end the process for vegas. Then desktop comes back, sometimes at a lower resolution.

System Details:

- Windows 10 Ultimate w/ Vegas 19 build 643
- PC: i7-6950x CPU / 64gb ram / Radeon 480x GPU / m.2 main drive & 1tb ssd edit drive (projects stored here)

Troubleshooting completed:

- Dynamic ram preview set to zero and GPU acceleration disabled (no effect)
- Uninstalled Vegas 19 and reinstalled. Also, uninstalled all previous versions of Vegas (no effect)
- Rolled most recent windows updates to system via system restore (unsure what updates were but no effect)

Really frustrated about this as it is my machine for work. I'm self employed and need to get it working. It's not worked for nearly a month now. I cannot use any h.265 clips from GoPro Hero 10 as a result... I don't believe h.264 clips from other cameras are crashing it. However, a major part of my production process are those h.265 clips! It never had a problem before. Seems to have started doing this around the latest Vegas update to build 643... I'm not sure where to download previous Vegas 19 builds?

Your issue seems to be the same one I'm having. It worked just fine a couple months ago but some update must have messed up the HVEC decoding? It's completely unstable on my machine :(

RogerS wrote on 7/31/2022, 7:47 PM

I have had good experiences with GoPro Hero 9 AVC clips of that's an option for you. I know it's a workaround.

weinerschizel wrote on 7/31/2022, 8:13 PM

@RogerS it's not an ideal option for me. I have several backlogged projects all in HVEC I've been unable to edit since this bug surfaced.

I think I have it figured out, I was able to get a date log of when I installed things...

2022-06-16 Last successful HVEC project completed
2022-06-22 Updated Vegas 19 to Build 643 (according to uninstaller)

SEEMS FIXED 2022-07-31 I rolled back to Vegas 19 Build 636.

There seems to be an issue in the code or conflict with our system / HVEC support in build 19.0.0.643

Note: Vegas 18 Build 527 has no issues with HVEC files; although limited support / poor HVEC performance and no GPU support for my Radeon graphics board.

@j-v can you post your system specs? I'm curious if we have some hardware in common that wasn't tested by Magix in this latest build.

RogerS wrote on 7/31/2022, 10:22 PM

For footage already shot as HEVC (not "HVEC"), just run it through Shutter Encoder if you have further issues with 19.636. It can do multiple files automatically.

Also, put your own system specs in your signature to make comparisons easier- see J-v's there.

Hey thanks! That's a really cool program. I'll put my system specs in signature now great suggestion.

I rolled also back to build 636 and now I also see no problems anymore with 4K HEVC files.

I downloaded Vegas Pro 20 trial to see if the HVEC issue has NOT been resolved. This error persists in Vegas Pro 20. Tech support wanted me to reinstall the latest build but I use the software ALL the time for work and cannot have my system down to troubleshoot.

Tech support was helping me but I simply don't have time to spend a day or even half a day uninstalling, reinstalling and trying a bunch of stuff for them. I asked if I could install both builds of V19 somehow and they never replied.

I have a new bug with Vegas 19 Build 636 GPU acceleration was working without a hitch. Now it randomly drops one of the channels from the video composite (red?). This happens in the timeline and persists when I render videos. I disable GPU acceleration and Render with CPU and it doesn't do it. Uploading a video (I'll update post when it's been uploaded).

If you use an AMD GPU, there have been numerous reports of their latest driver causing color shifts in VEGAS and other apps.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

Try the AMD 22.5.1 driver to avoid their channel mix-up bug.

@weinerschizel
My temp solution for the problem with much 4K HEVC files in the latest VPro 19 and VPro 20 is deactivating in file I/O the legacy HEVC decoding causing the SO4 compound doing the job.
Maybe it will also help you?

@RogerS I will revert. Is really weird cause I did another video w/ new driver and had no issues. I'll revert to older driver version 22.5.1. I'll report back after I've tried that.

I just rendered a video w/o GPU Acceleration (CPU only) and the channels were all messed up in the render too.

@j-v how do you deactivate file I/O? Not sure what SO4 is. Thanks!

There are many reports re: this new driver and mixing up channels.

Under preferences there is a tab called file i/o. Enable legacy AVC or HEVC to disable the newer GPU-enabled decoder (so4compound) or uncheck to activate it.

I wrote " deactivating in file I/O the legacy HEVC decoding", that is this

After starting VPro again for that task (decoding HEVC) is now the SO4 compoundplug used.
That you can see in the properties for such a file on the timeline, look

WOW @j-v HVEC works now! I tested disabling legacy HVEC decoding and it's working in the trial I downloaded for Vegas 20.

Have yet to test the older driver... However Vegas 20 also mixes up channels with that newer Radeon Driver. Will test older driver, 22.5.1, shortly and report back.

ISSUES RESOVED with newer previous driver 22.5.1 & disabling Legacy HVEC support.

Thanks for the help!! I'd have never figured this out. Tech support tries, but surprised they were not aware of these issues and forum was. I don't see them posting in here or looking at it much. They were ones who told me to update to latest AMD driver to try and get latest build to work but only created issues with compositing. Enough of my soap box... Vegas tech support, chip in once in a while if you're on this forum, lots of great info on here.

Tech support should know that 22.5.2 and 22.7.1 don't work properly in Vegas [VCE availability and color channel problem, respectively] based on multiple user reports. Too bad they don't seem to be aware of it.

Reyfox wrote on 8/13/2022, 11:16 AM

The latest driver now for AMD is 22.8.1. But in the release notes:

VCE presets may be in mixing in VEGAS Pro™ with some AMD Graphics Products such as the Radeon™ RX 6600 Graphics.

*sigh* I had a good nearly two month run. I upgraded to Vegas 20 as well. It's faster yet.

However, as of yesterday everything is unstable again. I've not touched or updated anything. Anybody have new info on Vegas stability?

This is a Vegas 19 focused thread- could you elaborate on the issues you have for 20 (or start a new one?)
