Vegas Pro LAGGING and SKIPPING frames (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, HELP ME!)

Bluelade wrote on 4/27/2018, 9:42 PM

I am at my breaking point with this BS. For months now, I've been dealing with this lagging preview issue that a lot of people seem to be dealing with. It's gotten to be so unbearable to the point where I've just decided to remove the program from my computer entirely. I've searched forums, including on here, and I've searched for YouTube videos to help me solve this problem. NONE OF WHICH HAVE HELPED IN THE SLIGHTEST! The forums just beat around the bush and never give you a straight answer. It's always followed by pointless, irrelevant questions from other users. And the YouTube videos always claim to help you SOLVE the issue when in reality they don't even know what the hell they're talking about. Every single video I have seen is titled "How to SOLVE preview LAG in SONY VEGAS PRO <version>!", but when you watch the video, they just tell you how to REDUCE the lag, not solve it. So, here I am. I'm looking for an intelligent individual who isn't gonna waste my time and tell me I need to change my preview quality to "AUTO". I just need to know why this is happening, what I can do to fix it, and I'll be on my way. I also recently upgraded my RAM from 16GB to 32GB and that hasn't helped as far as I can tell. Also, I forgot to mention that it does well with .mp4 files, but if I add a .mov, .avi, or pretty much any other video file that isn't .mp4, it will start skipping frames. Also, any time there is something sudden, like a quick flash transition, it completely skips over it and starts acting stupid. Another question I have is why Sony would like people to pay $500 for a program that can't even do what it's meant to do? Seems pretty dumb.

Anyway, help would be greatly appreciated!

BTW, this issue occurs on every single Vegas Pro version.

Just before someone refers you to this post, the lag is happening because your system can't decode the codec and display the results in real time. There are probably a dozen possible common reasons for this, 16GB Ram being among the least likely. You might not be aware that avi, mov, and mp4 are containers, not codecs. Since your system seems to be able to handle .mp4, which most likely is H264 compression, you'll probably do OK if you convert your footage to a more processor friendly codec like Cineform (available free through GoPro studio), or use proxies. If you've downloaded any codec packs, these can cause conflicts and you might want to clean them out.

It's Magix, not Sony, and $500, let alone the whatever the purported list price, is a silly price when you can get Resolve 15 free, or full Resolve (or Final Cut, but we won't mention that) for $299 - But you do get a few cut-down add-ons (that you're unlikely to need). Magix is in a difficult situation re price, but must be relying on Vegas disciples for whom it's working well to upgrade.

First of all, this is a USER forum, so be respectful and patient. Second, don't assume YOUR particular problem is generic; we do NEED the details of what you are doing and what your expectations are. So start with the trouble shooting guides & faq and you have a good chance to resolve your problem.  FYI many users work with Vegas on a daily basis without issue.

You should be using proxies and then use Preview full.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

Maybe, but perhaps we should find out a little about the "patient" before recommending therapy?

Asking questions about the issue I'm experiencing is relevant (i.e, what are you trying to do? when does the issue occur? what settings do you have set in the preferences? etc). Asking someone why they don't just use Adobe Premiere when they're trying to fix an issue with Vegas Pro is irrelevant. So, therefore, most of their questions are pointless and irrelevant. I don't have patience for people who like to waste other's time.

Are you high? I don't stop by every couple of months. On the rare occasion that I do stop by, it's to try and seek help for an issue I have, as I'm doing now. So how am I not wanting help with my problem? I'm here now, aren't I? I don't have anything to share. You want me to tell you how to render a video out? What about how to add a fancy transition? I could also tell you how to split a video track in half. Would that make you happy? No, I didn't think so.

How could I go about clearing out codec packs? I'm not familiar with the "technical" side of Vegas Pro. All I'm familiar with is rendering and editing side of it.

Thanks! :)

Ok, so now back to the original post. Have you done what I asked and checked out the trouble shooting guides? Are you going to share the necessary information? Please share your details in a brief and cogent manner.

Blueblade, if you're lucky you can just go to "uninstall or change a program", select the codec/pack and click uninstall. That doesn't always work, or work fully, if so, it get's complicated, Google. My suggestion to convert to Cinescore probably would fix the symptoms, but not the disease - like I said, there's a dozen possible reasons, to try to pin them down you're going to have to do as Kinvermark requests.

With codec pack we mean a software codec package that didn’t NOT come with Vegas, like K-Lite codec pack or others.

@OldSmoke or anybody, does any of the VEGAS MAGIX Partners “slip-in” CODECS with the bunderling? Prodad with MERCALLI? Or NEWBLUEFX with ProType Tiltler? Or Boris? Or do they ALL stick to the Program, when it comes to CODECS?

OldSmoke wrote on 4/29/2018, 5:16 AM

@Grazie I believe the SAL version of Mercalli installs codecs, it’s been a while that I installed it on my system, but it doesn’t interfere with Vegas. The old BCC8 didn’t which I don’t use anymore and uninstalled. I don’t use NB, I don’t like their product policies when comes to upgrades but I also don’t have a need for it. ProType Titler also doesn’t install any additional codecs. Media Players are know to install codecs, maybe even on screen capture software?

Yes, that is correct - Mercalli SAL does install codecs, but it is optional during the install process, though I'm not sure what compromise there is if the codec/s aren't installed

I know that when you’re having a problem with a program it’s easy to get frustrated to the point of anger, swearing up a storm and having a complete fit (just so you know, I’m not saying you did any of these, just giving an example) but doing all that isn’t going to solve your problem or make people want to help you. Would you really want to help someone like that? I’d guess - no.

I know you’re having problems with VEGAS Pro, a lot of people have, but many of them have asked for help in a calm, rational, and respectful manner. So, from now on, please ask us for help in a nice, rational, and respectful way. Don’t put this community down because they won’t give you the exact answer you’re after. It’ll do you no good and it’ll only make people less likely want to help you.

In a nutshell, being nice makes people want to help you and being annoyed and angry doesn’t.

I hope you do manage to solve your problem and have a great day!

@Bluelade Try going through this troubleshooting guide for smooth playback: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-make-my-video-preview-play-smoothly-in-vegas-pro--104624/

If that doesn't work, you can also try tweaking some internal preferences described in this comment and the one 2 below it:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-15-update-4-build-321-general-discussion--110655/?page=7#ca686283

Changing internal preferences can have undesired consequences such as making your system unstable. If they don't help, change them back.

How am I putting this community down? I haven't said anything negative about THIS specific community. I just talked about forums in general as far as I can tell. Sometimes you can't make people understand with niceness, you need to be firm and tell them "Look, I'm not looking for games, I'm looking for answers. Don't waste my time asking irrelevant questions but instead ask questions you need to know that will help you further understand my issue." My apologies if people get offended by a straight-to-the-point attitude. I'm not one who likes to play 20 questions if it isn't gonna lead anywhere.

But thanks, I hope I solve it too (which is unlikely).

And that's why you are rubbing people the wrong way. Even though it may take answering more questions to bring others up to speed on your problem, the benefit of doing so patiently is access to a collective knowledge base that far exceeds yours or mine.

Now, as to you deciding "which" questions others need to have answered to get on your page, and hopefully beyond, that's simply not your call. It conjures up another game, that of a user conveniently withholding key information, for whatever secretive reason one can imagine, and a few ressons we haven't thought of, yet.

You can graciously provide the information asked, whether relevant, embarrassing, or otherwise, or lose the benefit of our responses. But you don't get to have it both ways, impatience notwithstanding.
