can't run 'major update': errors because platinum is running! ?

wolfmax wrote on 12/15/2019, 10:01 PM

i open the app, choose 'major update' from the popup (or via menu), it prompts for now or later and i've tried both a few times - neither work. both fail with error: "installer unable to update platinum while it is running" without option to close it which to me is dead-end dumb.  so how else do i update app without opening it?  i just finished the trial assuming it wasn't updating for that reason, and due to daily crashing, i need the update. totally impossible loop.

What app are you trying to update? Did you purchase it from Magix?

wolfmax wrote on 12/15/2019, 10:13 PM

i thought this was support. my bad, logged support ticket right after. but if anyone knows answer, appreciated.

Musicvid wrote on 12/15/2019, 10:20 PM

This is not support.

As a user for 18 years, I have never heard of those messages. Vegas Movie Studio has not announced a "major update."

Technical support is linked at the top of the main forum page. They will ask you the same questions I did. You would be well advised to treat them nicely, unlike your peers.

Good luck!

this is the popup the OP gets.

@wolfmax This problem has cropped up a few times as you will find if you search the forum. It happens because VMS hasn't completely shut down so go into Windows Task Manager and kill it there. The update should then proceed. Alternatively go to https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-movie-studio-16-update-3-build-158-167--117860/ and download the update file, and then with VMS not running install it.

Thanks for clearing this up, @EricLNZ

I will own my mistake, as usual. The OP has since changed his original "WTF" post four times after the fact.

Welcome to the Vegas Forums.

In the Task Manager be sure and check the Processes tab. That probably is what is still running and not the Application.

purchased platinum from magix. never a "major update." message in 18 years? i get the popup on every launch since installing trial (downloaded to best recall from sony site. i will uninstall and reinstall if i dont hear from support today, i worked in support re framing/phrasing/patience etc.

vkmast wrote on 12/16/2019, 2:45 PM

Sony sites have nothing to do with the current VEGAS product line updates.

vkmast wrote on 12/16/2019, 3:01 PM

Your software can also be downloaded by entering your serial number at https://www.magix.com/us/support/my-service-center/product-downloads/

if i 'end the process' it'll close the update popup with it as they both run on same process it seems aka the process must be running for the update popup to run. catch 22. so thanks for alt location for build 167 download as i think i will need it, but will try one last time with tsk mgr open. again, after 30min 'download' then it asks for permission to change my system 'yes' then bombs out and no trace of VMS was running.

so i ran the build 167 update externally. it too bombed out with same error with no VMS process running. will reboot and try again.

note: my computer does 'act up' and vegas has been crashing most days 1-4x, some days not at all. it might be drivers or borderline specs.

rebooted, tired of failure in the app, ran the external update, it installed.

reboot solved the problem, used the external update.

vkmast wrote on 9/14/2020, 7:35 PM

You seem to try and download when the program is running.

yes because it wont update unless when I open the software? and it did it again

Mr.JP wrote on 9/14/2020, 10:05 PM

it finished and it asked me if i wanted to update right now or after Vegas is closed so i closed it and the window closed along with it @vkmast

Mr.JP wrote on 9/14/2020, 10:06 PM

Now I'm stuck without that update being completely done and my software i paid for isn't properly working now> why is that

EricLNZ wrote on 9/14/2020, 11:39 PM

@Mr.JP

1 - Shut down VMS

2 - Download the update from here https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-movie-studio-17-update-1-builds-137-179--123724/

3 - Run the update

4 - Open VMS and you should have the latest build. But be warned it appears to reset all customisation and preferences. It's not supposed to.

I went ahead before i got a response to just uninstall Vegas Movie Studio 17 Pro and reinstalled it and its working fine and im assuming i should have gotten the latest update. I'm assuming? am I correct on that @EricLNZ

See the build number of your VEGAS Movie Studio 17 Platinum in Help dropdown menu > About... > General.
