Program Crashing .... frequently

Sargan wrote on 7/8/2019, 2:40 PM

Bought v 16 of MSP ... looking for help to resolve a problem.

Started to use in last 48 Hrs ..... and had several crashes ...... no error, just program simply disappears off screen, each time it has been while carrying out an operation .. latest while applying stabilisation.

Previously when carrying out a save, or applying other media effects.

Not happened during render - which is the most processor intensive

When I restart it advises it did not complete last action, and do I want to restore.

This is on a fast W10 64 bit PC with plenty of RAM

I am on Version 16 (build 109)

Project was a single track video.

Since writing above - more details .... crashed another 5 times.

I have seen exact same step each time .... Adding Media Fx ... video stabilisation. On different clips (so not a media issue) I start stabilisation ... green progress bar moves along at regular cadence, then gets to 99% and stalls .... nothing for about 10 sec then the programme just shuts down.

This has been on several different clips and on 3 different projects, PC had been fully rebooted between projects.

Noticed this failure is on longer clips ... but still only 30 sec long ...... shorter ones seem OK. On one failure progress bar did go to 100% .. but then program went 'not responding' and the spinning windows donut ..... left it several minutes - eventually screen faded to white - did not recover.

When I restart it has error attached

Yes ..... looking for help on I stop it crashing .. the details were to provide context.

j-v wrote on 7/8/2019, 5:29 PM

Therefore we have to know exactly what you are doing.
I know you use VMS 16 latest build and f.i. tried to stabilize, but nothing about projectsettings, project , sourcefiles a.s.o.

I never used this plugin, but I tested it now for you, I have one crash with this bex64 thing...

On the few fine tests I did (one was 3min clip) I see that this plugin isn't very practical as it has no "options" to tweak, on one clip it zoomed in ~X7, totally pixelate the video makes it unusable...

I will not be back on PC until tonight ... but I can advise the media files are 1920 x1080 59.97frame rate

Colour, stereo, total project is less than 3 mins, single video track made up of a number of small video clips (15 - 40 sec in length)

No music track added only stereo as per media files.

Text Title start, and standard (from pick list transitions) ..... but also tried applying stabilization to individual clips and it fails on longer clip (~30sec)

Rest of details I can add tonight.

EricLNZ wrote on 7/9/2019, 4:23 AM

Personally I prefer the old legacy stabilizer to the new Video Stabilizer. You can make the old stabilizer appear in FX - https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/can-the-old-vegas-stabilize-be-made-to-appear--112755/#ca696648

Physical PC... Intel i5-3570K 3.4GHZ

Nothing wrong with that file , it is common AVC =H264 codec.
But to use AVC on editing within a program when you do nothing maybe your i5 is enough, maybe not.
But if you really are going to edit those files, that processor is much to weak and you need at least an i7.

My PC far exceeds minimum requirements for MSP, while I agree there is alway a higher performance - the i5 is more than capable.

Here is a graph of the processor usage during stabilisation - not hitting the stops at all

Just tried that - same failure

OK, that is your choice and good you know that it is enough.
I cannot further help you and I wish you happy editing with this or other programs.

Hello Sargan,

Looking through our database, I am not seeing any crash reports with the same signature as the one you have posted. If you submit the crash report, it can help the team diagnose the problem.

Sargan wrote on 7/10/2019, 12:38 PM

where/how do I find a crash report ? ... the program just dissapears ... full close down. happy to provide, if you tell me how.

That unfortunately does not help - I get no pop-up window with option to send report ... program simply gets to 99% ... freezes for around 10 sec then shuts down with no error message.

On restart I get the attached message ... is there a way to enable logging or similar ?

@Sargan Can you upload one of your problem clips to a file sharing service so others can download and try on their installations.

maybe the .erpt files in this folder

I'll upload one today , I'll also see if there is anything in: C:\Users\___\AppData\Local\VEGAS\ErrorReport

As a test I did enable Hardware acceleration - totally crashes the Programme, even though GPU is listed in teh card drop down list. Has Vegas ceased supporting Hardware Acceleration ? Its a pity as there is huge video processing power available on GPU card.

OK ... there were reports there ..... I recreated failure and could see it creates 3 reports ....for same time stamp ... This forum does not allow attaching of the file type ... so all 3 are in this folder:

Here is one that fails every time, and is also the one that generated the Error Reports I provided link to https://www.dropbox.com/s/bco57js8y6s8x37/P1000820.MP4?dl=0

@Sargan

Thanks for the file to try out.
On my laptop with VMS 16 I get the same error inspite all tricks and precautions I used.
Even with a small part as a subclip after ending at 99% the program stops and is off screen without a warning.
Corrected: I think that it is a bug using QSV for GPU accelerated video effects, later after a correction of @vkmast I tried it with my NVia GPU and it ends normal using Video Stabilisation.

Last changed by j-v on 7/11/2019, 7:56 AM, changed a total of 2 times.
