Vegas Pro 19 : Disappointed!

Vegas Pro 19 : Disappointed!
When I read the message "Introducing the all-new VEGAS Pro 19, from our new simplified product line-up to the most significant product improvements", I still wonder what this new version will really offer!
The performance looks promising and very attractive and the first impressions of users are very positive!
First I find it difficult on the Site of Vegas Pro what applies to me in the version "Vegas Edit" ! Fortunately, after a long search found information posted by RogerS and in a very clear performance on YouTube done by Scrapyard Films what I can expect.
Many people have already expressed their wishes in the community for Vegas Pro 19. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-19-feature-requests--123432/
I had proposed 29 points that are essential to me and that were also requested by other users.
None of these points are inserted in Vegas Pro 19, and were essential and most very easy to insert it in Vegas Pro 19!
For example, I'm talking about Lock a track, Copy a entire track, Copy a mask to new event, Modify color of Track Motion or Parent Motion when it is used, Import .svg or .eps files, Zoom in and out in preview window, New Empty Event icon in the timeline toolbar, Update old video DX effects to OFX effects, Snapping to Mask grid, Drag/Copy video-event in without his timeline, More dockable windows, Increase video playback speed, Mute/Unmute audio button in Trimmer, Organize the Project Media List, Customize Plug-In Chooser,.....and many more of these!
https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-19-feature-requests--123432/?page=6
Instead I see an update of the icons, Color Grading interface, Colorize effect, Scene Detection, Style Transfer, Upscale and Zoom. These were an upgraded in Vegas Pro 18. Was this essential ? Who will use some of these effects?
Good that they want to improve this, but should this be in an upgrade? Shouldn't these be adjusted earlier in an update?
Currently I see as the only improvement in my personal use that the cursor is now visible at the search function and that now finally Mocha Tracking Data can be imported into the Motion Tracking. But about that I still think that instead of developing a Motion Tracking self and upgrading this for three years, I still think it would have been better to introduce a lighter version of Mocha Pro in Vegas Pro as was done in Hitfilm Pro (HItfilm Mocha)!

I actually expected a lot more from Vegas Pro 19. I read all the wishes of all the users last year in Vegas Community. I was really thinking of a huge change in terms of simplicity in use instead of beautification to attract new buyers! May I point out that satisfied users advertise the best. Vegas pro does nothing (or at least very little) for its current users (= his own future)
I don't know what to do now? Moving on to Vegas Pro or looking forward to something new that makes me feel better! One thing is sure my heart feels better now after this post!

While I think you have a very good list of improvement ideas, I think you dismiss the changes to VP 19- did you try them? Also this is the first build of VP 19 and it's been explained that there is a new model of continuous improvement (major features will be introduced when they are done, not on an annual basis).

Scene detect was impressive- you import a video with different scenes and cuts, hit a button and then you can turn them into subclips one for each scene.

Color grading panel improvements are not just cosmetic. Range-limited color wheels (where you control the range!) were something I and others had asked for (like Resolve log wheels). There are also presets to convert from S-log 3 to Rec 709, etc. for many popular cameras and combinations under the LUT area.

AI-based upscale is something that replaced a semi-functional ancient smart upscale OFX. Many of us have legacy footage we want to incorporate in new projects that are HD or higher.

Being able to edit Blackmagic raw is exciting to some (and ProRes raw is coming).

Having stock footage and music integrated into Vegas is helpful and I plan to make use of that. Text to speech I care less about but if speech to text comes that would be a huge gamechanger! (automatic transcription)

Hello,

Yes, of course I tried Vegas Pro 19 first!
But this hasn't lasted much time in the Vegas Edit version. There's not much to try out!

Gary Rebholz did mention that whatever they introduced in VP19 at the moment is just the beginning. Meaning more feature and enhancement will be coming into VP19 constantly in update form.

VEGAS Creative Software is not a big company like Adobe or Blackmagic that has all of the resource to full fill everything. They will implement those request slowly, but surely.

For sure. VEGAS CS is small compared to mentioned techs but guess it's development is very nice. It is obligatory to mention that team behind VEGAS Movie Studio was moved a while ago to VEGAS Pro team so it will improve developing.

@Pridak most likely it was the same VEGAS team working on both. "our team was stretched so thin trying to work on both of them."

Ami talks about more "editing" tools, just remember that you "edit" way more often and before you do the other stuff on the timeline.

** Only now there is scene detection? My other NLE (Corel's) had it for ages, since DV times.

It is of cause not possible to cover the very long list of feature wishes in one release but we covered an impressive list of improvements in VP19.

One of the most requested feature was the stability and performance improvement of the dynamic RAM preview and pre-rendering feature. Adjustment-tracks, scene detection and the RL wheels are some new features. Blackmagic RAW is also an awesome codec feature and new ones are in the continuous delivery. Check the long list of improvements, the trial or the youtube channels "Tech Dive AVCLUB", "Scapyard Film", "JustAlexHalford", "VEGAS Creative Software" and others.

I see VEGAS 19 as a step forward and in the right direction. The idea that they are moving towards continuous updates vs new version once a year in HUGE. I think in the long run this will give the engineers more room to address and implement new features as they go instead of cramming everything into a single release once a year.

Be careful what you wish for, this makes the most sense in a subscription only model. Also they promote the subscription model and hide the non subscription version when trying to purchase. Everything is pointing towards a subscription only future

@VEGASPascal I admit when I open Vegas Pro 19 that the view is very nice and professional, but this does not give me the ease I look for when editing.
It's been several years that I've been waiting for some adjustments. I see how some other video editors work and in Vegas Pro this should also be possible!
Many I ask for are simple and essential changes : Lock a track, Copy a entire track, Copy a mask to new event, Modify color of Track Motion or Parent Motion when it is used,...
I had sent my wish list to you (via questionnaire on Vegas Pro future improvements) soon after the release of Vegas Pro 18 to give you time to think. I had also posted it in the Vegas Community to spark interest to other users. And why? Because these changes are really necessary. You are now coming up with adjustments that probably do not work well and next year we will come back in the next updates! And so we start again from the front. And so time goes on!
First, try to finish what already exists!
Before I had used the complete film made by "Scapyard Film" to test out Vegas Pro.

Copy an entire track

It's already there and has been for many VP versions. R click the track header and there's an option to 'Duplicate Track'.

Modify color of Track Motion or Parent Motion when it is used,...

Again, R click the track header and you can change the color of the track though, to be fair, the range of available colors is very limited.

A consideration is that track motion affects every event on that track, so I find that when I need track motion it is possibly for only 1 event and thus is the sole event on that track - so I rename the track in the header to identify the usage of that track.

It's of course disappointing to see none of one's personal suggestions implemented.

However, as one gains experience with the software in its present state, it's easier to understand the engine and what is practical and ripe for improvement.

Eventually, one is able to make better suggestions, and detach oneself from the impractical and frivolous. Also to learn how to frame one's suggestions to resonate with developers, whose limitations are time, resources, and dealing with tens of thousands of users, all with their own pet wishes and expectations for the software.

Example: By "Lock a Track" do you by chance mean lock the Event position on a track or a group of tracks? It's already there!

So yes, critical eyes such as yours are needed; I'm sure with the time and experience mentioned, you will become a valuable contributor to the future of Vegas. Exercising patience in learning the program and its unique advantages and limitations is the way to get there.

I've read though this thread and I'll just make a couple statements.

First, it was mentioned the team that was working on VMS was moved to VEGAS Pro...well, there was no exclusive VMS team. The same team worked on both Movie Studio and VEGAS Pro. With the end of VEGAS Movie Studio, the team no long needs to worry about spending the time to get updates and fixes in for that application, which should allow us to spend a little more time on VEGAS Pro.

The size of the team was mentioned. We are back up to 7 full time engineers right now (not including me as most of my time is spent in the management realm these days). It is our hope we will be able to increase the size of the team at some point, but a lot of contributing factors are involved in that process (including revenue stream and finding qualified candidates).

I can understand if some of our users are disappointed in VP19. The reality is that the user base for VP is extremely diverse. With a team of our size, we are not going to get the hundreds (if not thousands) of feature requests done. We need to be selective about what we do balancing out what will help the most people, the time we have available, and the skills of engineers on our small team. We simply are not going to satisfy the all requests of every type of user with each new version of VEGAS.

We will be continuing to add new features to VP19, so you won't have to wait until next year to see significant improvements. And we are listening to customers feedback and requests. We have a huge (and daunting) list of these requests which we continually parse through and add to. It is from this list that we determine the direction we go next.

Are we perfect with everything we try to do? No. But this team is working its butt off to provide an excellent editing experience and we plan to keep moving VEGAS ahead as quickly as we possibly can. Hopefully we will be able to address many of the items that some of you have been desperately wanting.

Those of you who are disappointed, I do understand. We really want to keep all of you happy. I personally have been disappointed knowing that we simply aren't able to release the perfect software and make every single one of you elated with every single release we do. It is difficult for me to know that we will lose some users to competing products despite the tremendous effort our team has put in. The passion on our team is strong, though. We have a lot of work that we plan to do and I hope you all stay on board for the ride.

BobMoyer wrote on 8/22/2021, 12:19 PM

@VEGASDerek,

Your post above may not be what everyone wanted to hear, but I must say that the honesty of your comments should/could entice some of the doubters to stay aboard. Thank you.

Amivideotek wrote on 8/22/2021, 12:36 PM

@VEGASDerek Thank you for your explanation. This gives me the feeling that the wishes of users are already being listened to.

@Dexcon Copy an entire track is not possible in VP! I can just duplicate a track in the same project. I want to copy/paste an entire track from project A to project B to the clipboard, and where all his events, effects, track motion,... as by the original track are copied between two open programs. And this can be very useful. This works already by copying events from project A to project B between two open programs.

But I explained the whole explanation of my requests in : https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-19-feature-requests--123432/?page=6

@Musicvid Lock a track protects a track from making new changes to a finished track, or from incorrect actions that cause me to accidentally delete or move a track and so on.

I know the function of grouping tracks, but I wasn't talking about that at all.

I think that grouping tracks no longer works in VP19!

@VEGASPascal @alifftudm95 I don't think so, but I could be wrong. Will you tell me which ones would already exist?

I can understand if some of our users are disappointed in VP19.

I think most of us users are actually quite satisfied with Vegas Pro 19 and the way development goes - otherwise we wouldn't be here anymore. But disappointments are mostly a result of lack of information (eg missing serial numbers), misleading marketing (eg Sound Forge Pro) and unexpected product changes (eg Movie Studio that suddenly got replaced with a totally different product, and made many of us very very very worried about WTF is going on at Vegas!).

Kick out your marketing team, fix the information - and 99% of problems will disappear.
