Map animation

JackW wrote on 7/30/2019, 1:28 PM

Does anyone know where to find Kelly Chien's map animation instructions for extending a line of travel across a map? We need to do this across the rail system in Wales and I'm unhappy with the results I've worked out so far. As I recall from many years ago, Kelly had a rather elegant method for doing this.

Why not using Peter_P's RouteAnimation plug-in for Vegas Pro?

JackW wrote on 7/30/2019, 2:40 PM

Perhaps because before you mentioned it now I've never heard of this tool. Thanks for the information. It looks quite good.

If for some reason it doesn't work, use an image editor like GiMP or Photoshop, create a new layer on top of the map, draw your route out onto the map. Then disable the layer with the map on it, so you just have the line, and import that into Vegas. Then use the mask tool to hide the line, and then add keyframes to animate it revealing the line as you want it to be drawn on the map.

Not the most elegant solution, but it'll work.

Kelly's map animator was pretty cool too, hope you find it and share.

Sorry, I should have tested before making suggestions. It seems like this plug-in doesn't work in the current Vegas Pro version (or just not on Windows 10).

@JackW

you could get Magix video deluxe (premium) NLE for 79Euro which has a cut down version of Vasco da Gama 11 as a bonus, or just get only Motion Studio's Vasco da gama 12 (prices start from 99 Euro and up for the more advanced versions).

Vasco da gama is absolute top in route animation.

There is also Magix travel maps application (much easier to use than Vasco da gama, but less professional), this is included in Magix Video Pro X NLE or in Magix photo story traveler edition:

It still works with all new Vegas pro versions on Windows 10 (up to 1903 testet) but it requires to be installed within an old Sony Vegas pro, because ist uses some of these *.DLLs. I intend to change it to an OFX version by end of the year.

+1 for Travel Maps and Vasco da Gama.

Magix updated Travel Maps yesterday and I'm starting to look at all of the changes. You can quickly trace a route, anotate it and animate it. However, if you want the camera to follow along the route, it can become jerky with a lot of points. You can also import a gpx file.

Do you want to use regular maps, like Esri or Satellite maps? Travel Maps does both plus a few more, or you can import your own map.

Motion Studios Vasco da Gama does not do Satellite maps unless you import them. I have Motion Studios Vasco StreetMaps 7 (world) so I get detailed maps of the areas that I'm interested in and then they show up in VdG. If you have a lot to do and you want good control over speed, stopover points, zooming in/out, camera smoothly following the route, then VdG is the best way to go. VdG can also import GPX files.

Vegas Pro 18 Edit, Vegas Movie Studio 16 Platinum, Magix Video Pro X16, Magix Movie Studio Platinum 2024, Xara Designer Pro X19, Samplitude Pro X8 Suite, Music Maker 2024 with Premium 2023, SF Audio Cleaning Lab 4, Sound Forge Pro 16 and more.

I have now tried this plugin with Vegas PRO 16 (424) and it works fine.

Well thank you.

I just tried installing for Sony Vegas Pro 13 but this doesn't work either. It will not appear in the FX list.

Edit:
I see the DLL must be registered as admin.

I'm happy to report that Kelly's little utility (see vkmast's comment above for URL) works beautifully. It's down and dirty but it's very quick, has no learning curve despite limited documentation, and produces a nice clean line of travel on any map you can download.

Thanks to all who offered advice and pointers to other programs.

Peter. What If I don't have an old Sony folder? It's a new install of Vegas on a newly installed Windows 1903. Thoughts?

ScrapyardFilms wrote on 8/1/2019, 7:29 AM

Possibly download and install Vegas 13 from Magix download repository to have the folder generated?

musko wrote on 8/1/2019, 8:07 AM

I don't have installed (and any folder) Vegas Pro 13 and PeterP's plugin working correctly in Vegas Pro 16 (424) as I wrote above.

Try edit REG file with correct file path.

Can you please describe to what loacation you copied the file and the way you registered the RouteAnimationX64.dll ?

j-v wrote on 8/1/2019, 9:06 AM

I did it by unpack those files in Vegas Pro 15/Videoplugins and editted the batfile as showed. As @ Marco wrote you have to register that file as admin.

Thanks, so you don't have any Sony Vegas versions installed on your system ?

On Windows 10 it may also be required to to unlock the dll using the properties as shown here.

Off course.

My folder where I copy RouteAnimationX64.dll is C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 16.0\Video Plug-Ins
and I edited REG file to regsvr32 "c:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 16.0\Video Plug-Ins\RouteAnimationX64.dll"

See attachments

Peter_P wrote on 8/1/2019, 10:29 AM

Thanks, so it seems not to be dependent on some Sony Vegas pro DLLs as I assumed based on a problem report of a user. I could not test it, because I still have Vegas pro 13 on my systems.
